Khái niệm
Số nhiều (Plurals) là danh từ và đại từ chỉ nhiều hơn một người hoặc sự vật, sự việc.
Sở hữu (Possessives) là những danh từ và đại từ thể hiện sự sở hữu.
Có những điểm tương đồng và khác biệt trong cách hình thành số nhiều và sở hữu từ có thể gây nhầm lẫn. Đặc biệt, sự nhầm lẫn có thể phát sinh khi sử dụng hoặc không sử dụng dấu nháy đơn (').
VD: 

• One cannot overstate the importance of bee's to the pollination of Michigans blueberry crop. 
• One cannot overstate the importance of bees to the pollination of Michigan's blueberry crop.

Trong câu đầu tiên, cụm từ sở hữu bị sử dụng sai dẫn đến câu không có ý nghĩa, các em có thể chuyển danh từ đó thành dạng số nhiều như câu thứ hai để nghĩa của câu được rõ ràng hơn.



Các dạng số nhiều, sở hữu
1. Danh từ số nhiều
Danh từ số nhiều không cần dấu nháy đơn.
VD: The plants in the greenhouse are thriving.

2. Danh từ sở hữu số ít
Danh từ sở hữu số ít cần một dấu nháy đơn theo sau bởi chữ "s".
VD: The company's most popular products include shampoo and moisturizer.
Lưu ý: Quy tắc này áp dụng ngay cả khi danh từ số ít đã kết thúc bằng "s" (ví dụ: the rhinoceros's horn).

3. Danh từ sở hữu số nhiều
Danh từ sở hữu số nhiều kết thúc bằng "s" cần có dấu nháy đơn sau "s".
VD: On many superhero teams, the heroes' costumes are each a different color.
Lưu ý: Nếu danh từ số nhiều không kết thúc bằng "s", thì nên thêm "s" sau dấu nháy đơn (ví dụ: the men's swim team).

4. Đại từ
Đại từ không sử dụng dấu nháy đơn. “His” và “her” không sử dụng dấu nháy đơn. “Yours”, “ours” và “their” cũng vậy.
VD: His favorite food is the same as hers.

5. Sở hữu của cụm gồm 2 danh từ (nâng cao)
Nguyên tắc chung: ‘s một lần nếu 2 chủ thể cùng sở hữu chung, và ‘s sau mỗi danh từ nếu chủ thể sở hữu riêng biệt.

Ở ví dụ trên, các em có thể phân vân giữa 2 đáp án A và D, trong đó chủ ngữ của câu phải là results, không phải result’s như câu B và C. 
Trong trường hợp này, nếu Hume và Gold cùng làm chung, sở hữu chung thì đáp án sẽ là A (chỉ có ‘s một lần), còn nếu Hume và Gold làm riêng biệt, thì đáp án sẽ là D (có ‘s sau mỗi danh từ). 
Hume và Gold thuộc 2 teams khác nhau, vậy đáp án đúng trong câu này sẽ là D. Hume’s and Gold’s results,

Các câu hỏi SAT sẽ hỏi về 2 danh từ số nhiều và sở hữu. Hãy đảm bảo rằng đáp án các em chọn có sử dụng dấu nháy đơn nếu là sở hữu hoặc thêm “s” nếu là số nhiều một cách chính xác cho hai danh từ này.

Hãy lưu ý từ "its" và "their"
"Its" và "their" tuân theo quy tắc giống như các đại từ sở hữu khác: chúng không yêu cầu dấu nháy đơn. Tuy nhiên, những đại từ này thường bị nhầm lẫn với các từ viết tắt "it's" và "they're". Khi các em thấy dạng "it's/its" hoặc "there/their/they're" xuất hiện trong các đáp án, hãy kiểm tra kỹ xem đáp án đó có đang sử dụng dạng phù hợp không.
